It’s Italian – Fresh, Friendly and Flavorful

One of the things I love about living in Austin is the abundance of really great family-owned neighborhood restaurants. Located in Wells Branch in the same spot as the original Gumbo’s, It’s Italian is one of those neighborhood jewels. The owners and their staff are friendly and a lot of care goes into creating each menu item. The food is not only delicious, the presentation of each dish is gorgeous.

Salad

It's Italian salad

I ordered the house salad with the house Italian dressing. The lettuce was fresh and had lots of extras — cucumbers, olives, carrots, cherry tomatoes and shredded mozzarella. A great start to a delicious meal.

Main course

There is a wide variety of Italian dishes to choose from. Appetizers include bruschetta, fried ravioli, shrimp scampi, calamari and grilled asparagus. The menu includes pizza with a wide variety of toppings, pasta, chicken, veal, steak and seafood.

It's Italian lasagna

My husband ordered the meat lasagna. It also comes without meat or with meatballs and/or sausage.

It's Italian veal marsala

The veal marsala was divine, with tender mushrooms and a wonderful warm marsala sauce. The fettuccine was coated with a creamy light sauce with a hint of garlic.

Dessert

It's Italian lemon cake

We were so full that we almost didn’t order dessert. The menu lists creme brulee, chocolate colossal cake and Italian cream cake; however, the owner/chef had made an interesting sounding lemon cake. All I can say is, “WOW.” The cake was soaked in a sweet lemon flavoring and the filling and topping was a creamy sweet lemon sauce. It was topped with a yellow lemon sauce and a dusting of powered sugar, making for a really beautiful dessert.

It’s Italian is vegetarian friendly, with items on the menu such as fettuccini alfredo, eggplant or portabella parmigiana, pasta primavera, or non-meat pizzas.

County Line BBQ by Car or by Boat

County Line BBQ

No 4th of July is complete without barbecue. It was too hot to cook out this year, so the entire family went to County Line. Set in an old lake lodge on Bull Creek, you can get there by car or by boat.

County Line BBQ

There were four of us, so we ordered the all-you-can-eat country style meal, with a choice of three meats, cole slaw, beans, potato salad and soft drinks. We decided on the sausage, chicken and extra moist brisket for our meats. They also have ham, extra lean brisket and beef ribs to choose from. This meal was a carnivore’s dream. The sausage was spicy, the brisket moist and delicious, and the chicken tender and tasty. I happen to LOVE barbecued chicken, so I tend to be picky about it. That said, I was very satisfied with the taste of County Line’s chicken. The breast was moist and I ate way too much of it. I took one bite each of the sides just to say I tasted them. They were good, but my taste buds were calling for some more brisket.

Turtles at County Line BBQ

Out back, County Line has a patio and a walk along the water’s edge. Turtles of all sizes and large catfish are accustomed to being fed food that can be purchased from a machine for 25 cents. We didn’t want to disappoint the wildlife, so we joined the half a dozen children throwing food into the water. I’m just a kid at heart, after all!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom at Chuy’s

You gotta love a place that serves Chicka Chicka Boom Boom enchiladas! Chuy’s is Austin Tex-Mex to the max. I’ve eaten at four of the five Austin locations and have never been disappointed. Their salsa is hot and tasty, but not as tasty as their spicy ranch dip — a blend of ranch dressing, jalapenos and tomatillo sauce.  Yum. I’ve always had to ask for the ranch dip — they don’t bring it out automatically.

And now for something completely different

Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken at Chuy's

I always have enchiladas or some other typical Tex-Mex dish at Chuy’s. On my last visit, however, I decided to try something different — the Elvis Green Chile Fried Chicken — chicken breast breaded with Lay’s potato chips, deep fried and smothered in green chile sauce and cheddar cheese, served with green chile rice and refried beans. The chicken was fork-tender. And the potato chip breading was crispy and delicious.

Chuy’s and Elvis

You also gotta love a place that has shrines to the one and only Elvis. Why?

Here’s the information from their web site: “Mike went out, spotted a vendor selling velvet paintings, bought two – Stevie Wonder and Elvis, and brought back the change. (Hey, we needed to buy nails to hang them, too.) After that, people’s natural love for the king inspired them to bring their own Elvis memorabilia to the restaurant. We graciously accepted. Before long the walls were covered in a veritable plethora of undeniable tackiness rivaling that of Graceland.”

Nachos at Chuy's in Austin

Chuy’s nachos are enough food to be a meal by themselves. I love guacamole!

Flan at Chuy's in Austin

For dessert? Can’t go wrong with Chuy’s flan! It’s the perfect ending to the perfect meal! “Thank ya very much!”

El Pollo Rico – I LOVE this chicken!

Delicious chicken from a drive-thru take-out? You bet! Austin’s El Pollo Rico is not your typical fast food. Perfectly seasoned charbroiled chicken is wrapped with a grilled onion to go in butcher paper. The Pollo Entero Combo — an entire chicken, rice, beans, a lime, eight corn tortillas and two kinds of incredible salsa — is only $11.99.

El Pollo Rico

The chicken is tender and flavorful. The beans have big chunks of onions and sausage. Yum. And I could devote an entire page to the salsa. The green sauce is a mystery – I tasted jalapenos and cilantro. Whatever it is that has been added to the sauce has all been blended to a smooth creamy green consistency. The red salsa is spicy and delicious.

El Pollo Rico

If you’ve never tried the chicken from El Pollo Rico, you have no idea what deliciousness awaits beneath the butcher paper, plastic and foil.

El Pollo Rico

There are five locations in Austin. This one in Round Rock is not a drive-thru and has tables inside if you want to eat and watch TV. There are also other items on the menu besides the chicken, however, I have yet to find anyone who has tried anything other than the chicken.

El Faro – My New Favorite Austin Restaurant

I have a new favorite restaurant — El Faro Taco & Cafe on Wells Branch Parkway in North Austin. The food at this family-owned restaurant is incredible. And so is the service. Owner and Chef Morales — as well as his wife, son and mother-in-law — made my husband and I feel like we were part of the family.

El Faro Taco & Cafe

Friday nights feature an all-you-can-eat buffet. I decided to try a few items and then go back if I had room for more.

On my plate and in my tummy:

  • Pozole
  • Enchiladas Tejanas
  • Tacos Dorados
  • Picadillo
  • Lengua
  • Chicken Pepe  (this was my favorite)
  • Carne Guisada
  • Rice
  • Flour Tortillas

The chicken and lengua were incredibly tender and tasty.

El Faro Taco & Cafe Friday Night Buffet

I was stuffed and wanted to save room for dessert, so I will have to wait until my next visit to try something different from the buffet.

What I will try next time:

  • Costilla de Puerco
  • Huesitos de Res
  • Puerco a la Mexicano
  • Charro Beans
  • Chiles Rellenos

El Faro Taco & Cafe Tres Leches Cake

Mrs. Morales is the pastry chef at El Faro. My husband and I shared a flan and a piece of tres leches cake. WOW. The flan was great. And the tres leches cake has to be the best I’ve eaten in Austin. The photo above is a tres leches cake that she had prepared for a birthday party.

If you are a fan of fresh and delicious food, served with care and a smile, then El Faro is just the place for you!
